Clarendon Lions Are 6-A Champs
The Clarendon Lions won the District 6-A title week by defeating Carlisle 48-21, they won over Lonoke 79-64, the team picked by all of the Coaches to win, and by a "come from behind victory" over Humnoke 46-45. This was the first Lion basket ball team to win a District Tournament since 1955.
The Lions placed two players on the all district team, they are 6 foot 4 inch junior,Leon Threet and 6 foot 3 inch junior, Lonnie Stewart. Other outstanding Lions were Rush Harding - leading assists, Albert Statewright who lead the fast break, Roosevelt Burgess helping on the boards, Harry Daniels, a sophomore, who pulled down some vital rebounds during the tournament and scored for the Lions, when points were badly needed, last but not least, another sophomore Robert Hester who scored 17 points during the last half against Lonoke to help the Lions win.
The Lions lost to the Class A, defending State Champions "Ouachita Warriors" in Barton Coliseum 55-54. Their spirit isn't defeated and they hope to return next year. The Lions ended the year with a 19-9 records, and will return 15 of 18 players to next year's team. The Lions are proud of the support they have gotten from their fans.
There was an estimated 250 who attended the State Tournament in Little Rock. The Coaches and teams expressed their thanks for your support of the Lions and Cub teams during 1970-1971.
